Mezcal's first album is White or Red, and comprises a mixture of songs relating to the two differing cultures of the wild west of the USA, with their respective influences on music coming through in the various songs, added to that Mezcal's european twist. The first song is called the American Civil Rights, it starts with a slightly sad tone to the music but as the words start to flow, the speed and the power of the song comes out much stronger, giving us a song of urgency telling us of some points in the American history that changed it's history. Living Free starts with a bit of harmonica and guitar, a nice gently song with a good drum beat coming in as the singing starts, giving us a free feeling to the song. The third track is On My Own, with a strong piano playing, almost reminding us of those scenes in the wild west films as the gun slinger walks into the bar. The song soons gathers a pace of urgency about it, and gets the foot tapping. Nothing Matters to You is the 4th track, which feels european in nature, but has the singer singing in a voice level very much like when Bob Dillion sang country. We then reach the title track, White or Red, this track starts with a real classic sound of the Native American drum beat and vocal chanting, it is a powerful song that stays in the mind. The Answer follows, and starts with the singer singing from the start, with no intro, and simple guitar playing, and a simple drum beat creeping in as the song plays. It is all about having to answer questions, whetehr it is from those around you or your family. We are now over the halfway point in the album with Don't Be A Falling Star, this is a heavy sounding song, with a strong beat, which often causes the feet to start tapping. Paradise Door starts off with a sound of a banjo, not that always strikes a cord with me, as a lover of the banjo sound, that is enough to make the song a taste of Paradise, and the singer does not drown out the banjo which carrys the tune wonderfully even when the other instruments then join into the song. Listen out for the whistling song and the accordian, that is a twist which to me works wonderfully.
Track 8 is Sweet Blond Angel, this is a strange song, it made me think of the Wurzels, as the song has the feeling of machining working in that extract type of way. This quickly follows with This is Our Night, a song again full of energy and a strong single beat, the feeling of those dancing around a camp fire at night and the fun you would have comes out in the this strong, with a strong mix of electric guitars to add to the power of the song. Desperate Love is the 11th track which starts with the song you know from western films, which then is backed up by a very happy twang as the song tells you of trying to attract the attention of the one you might love. The album then finishes with the song Mezcal, and immediately you feel the happiness of the song come out, a great song to finish the album with an dleaves you in a great mood. Overall the album is a great mix of coutnry music, though better to use the word alternative, as it is not the sound of Nashville, but closer to those sounds of the outlaws of country. I give this a 4 and a half stars, and recommend it for your collection if you like the off beat country music scene. You can find details of the album here http://www.mezcalband.com/ |
